community projects
The mission of Cape Fear Studios is "to involve, educate and enrich Cumberland County and surrounding communities with the opportunity to create and freely view art."
Some of our community projects include:
Kits for Kids Project
Cape Fear Studios, in conjunction with The Junior League of Fayetteville, is absolutely thrilled to announce the start of what we hope will be a fruitful and long running new program in the Cumberland County county community.
Kits for Kids will strive, at its heart, to provide local organizations that benefit children-at-risk with art kits and art instruction. The benefiting children will have the opportunity to express themselves creatively through art, while building confidence and new skills.
Children at the organizations will also have the opportunity to participate in an exciting art competition which will be juried, winner selected, and a gala silent auction and exhibit will celebrate the culmination of the children's work.
We look forward to all the good this program can do and CFS sincerely thanks the Junior League for their generous grant and for believing in the Kits for Kids Project.
Arts Council Art Attack
On Saturday, April 21st, Cape Fear Studios members Ryan Edel, Kathy Moore, Nancy Mabes, Sandie McFarlane, and Annette Szczekutek participated in an Art Attack festival at Lake Rim park. CFS was proud to provide a free-of-charge children's art activity which was a huge hit.
Children who participated used construction paper, stickers, glue, and tissue paper to create beautiful summer collages full of color, creativity, and character!

Ashton Woods Kids Art Program
Ashton Woods Transitional Housing program is a housing area which provides housing to families in Cumberland County. Families may live in Ashton Woods for up to two years while striving to save money, pay past debts, and work their way towards reestablishing themselves as independent and productive members of the community.
For the Ashton Woods Kids Club Art Program, members of Cape Fear Studios hold two-hour, twice a month art classes for the duration of the school year. This bi-weekly program began in 2001 and has served children and their families by enriching their lives through the arts.
The week long Ashton Woods Art Camp (generously funded by the Cumberland Community Foundation) is held during the summer and focuses on one art theme. For the summer of 2006, students created six separate projects that centered around the art of ancient cultures.
Both of these important programs focus on improving each child’s self-image, helping them to express their own unique voice, giving them the opportunity to show their creative side and express themselves through the arts.
Vision Resource Center Visually Impaired Pottery Classes
For five Mondays throughout November and December, members from the Vision Resource Center in Fayetteville will visit Cape Fear Studios for free pottery classes. Between 6 and 8 students, with varying degrees of visual impairment, are taking part in the classes and we are so happy to be able to provide quality art instruction for those who might not have the opportunity to take part in such a class otherwise.
The Lois Ferrari Memorial Art Scholarship
The Lois Ferrari Memorial Art Scholarship is given in memory of former Cape Fear Studios member artist Lois Ferrari, who was an integral part of what we do and who we are. It is in the amount of $500 and is to go to a college student in need of money to help pay for their art education supplies.
In addition to the $500 monetary scholarship, the scholarship recipient is also featured as the Artist of the Month for a 4th Friday exhibit.
The Lois Ferrari Memorial Art Scholarship is open to any student majoring in the fine arts at Fayetteville State University, Methodist College, Fayetteville Technical Community College, UNC-Pembroke, and Meredith College.

Heritage Place Art Shows
Heritage Place is a continuum-of-care community located on North Cool Springs Street in historic downtown Fayetteville and offers 76 independent-living apartments. Each month, Cape Fear Studios features one of our member artists in a gallery exhibit in the lobby of Heritage Place. The residents there are exposed to high quality original art, free of charge, and our artists are given the opportunity for their art to be seen by a new audience.
