Being able to draw is both wonderful and relaxing. It makes you look at the world with new eyes. I’ve loved to draw ever since I was a young child and it eventually led me to train as a Scientific Illustrator at Schule fuer Gestaltung in Zurich, Switzerland, as well as getting a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague, Netherlands.

This workshop is for everybody, whether you’re a complete beginner or have some experience already. We’ll mainly be working with graphite pencil, but as you work on your project, you can add some color too, with either colored pencils or water colors.

Topics that this workshop will cover are:

– learn about perspective
– basic shading and layering techniques with graphite pencil
– light and dark
– proportions: get them right
– composition: make your picture interesting
– learn to draw a simple object from nature
– draw a simple still life that you arrange yourself

Materials are included in the workshop price. You’ll get a mat to frame your finished project with at the end of the workshop. If you already have graphite pencils, colored pencils or water colors at home that you’d like to use, bring them to the workshop. You can also bring one or several small to medium sized objects that you think you would like to include in your still life. I too will provide an assortment of items that you can choose from.

But above all, come and enjoy learning something new in the unique atmosphere of the Cape Fear Studios!

Cumberland Community Foundation

Cumberland County Foundation

We want to say a BIG THANK YOU to the CUMBERLAND COUNTY FOUNDATION, INC! They supplied Cape Fear Studios with a grant to produce a FREE art experience to 22 Cumberland County children.  One of our member artist, Nancy Edge, put together a multi-day program called “Flashback to the 60’s.” Nancy is a former Cumberland County Public Schools art teacher, and she designed this program to integrate events of the 1960’s with hands on art experiences.   The journey included pop art with events in history and how these events influenced artists’ work. The artists presented were Andy Warhol, Peter Max, Wayne Thiebauld, and Louise Neilson. The children painted shoes, portraits, and created sculptures in the pop art style . They also viewed Norman Rockwell’s painting on the integration of schools in New Orleans . Other topics covered were Martin Luther King and the moon landing.   Again, thanks to the Cumberland County Foundation, Inc. for funding this free and dynamic art experience to some very lucky Cumberland County children.

Painting Figures Outdoors by Dan Beck – CANCELLED

Cape Fear Studios is presenting a 2D workshop by Dan Beck.  The cost of the workshop is $450.00 and will be held June 24, 2016 through June 26, 2016 at  Cape Fear Studios, 148 Maxwell Street, Fayetteville, North Carolina 28301.

Dan’s workshop will focus on a loose approach to painting the figure (outdoors) subject.  Exploring other ways to “see” will be discussed using the painter’s language of line, shape, value, color, texture and edge.  Dan will demonstrate at the beginning of each day, then students will paint the model as  Dan gives individual attention discussing the important 6 elements to painting the figure.

This workshop helps students simplify intent and learn how to use essential visual elements to give your paintings both direction and the “reason to be”. By helping you to understand and execute the importance of tf line, shape, value, color, texture and edges, your experience in painting the figure will be enhanced by not only integrating these  “rules”, but then giving you the freedom to taking it a step beyond.

Cape Fear Studios Launches Second Power2Give Fundraiser for New Lighting System

Cape Fear Studios needs a new lighting system to properly display its fine works of art.  The current system of a few can lights and florescent lighting does little to enhance and show the nuances of color, light, and shadow that its artists have worked tirelessly to convey in their various art forms.  In fact, it often detracts from the appearance.  Therefore, Cape Fear Studios would like to purchase new track gallery lighting with directional LED bulbs to properly illuminate the artwork. To help fund this project Cape Fear Studios has launched its fundraising campaign for new gallery lighting.  We have met our goal to pay for the first half  of our new lighting system and we will begin to install it soon.  We will still need to purchase the rest of the components for the new lighting system. So please help us raise the rest of the funds for this most worthy project.  The second phase of our campaign begins March 1, 2016 and ends May 30,2016.

Students having fun exploring the Art of Batik and Oil Painting

During the week of July 27th Cape Fear Studio presented a class in the ancient art of Batik by using-wax resists and fabric dyes to create artful fabrics.  During the week instructor Laura Bernstein and her students explored the batik process and created a variety unique batik pieces. The students also used  tie-dye methods to create fun and colorful t-shirts. They are proudly displaying their works below.

During the week of August 3-7 Jeff Nihiser taught Beginning Oil Painting. In Jeff’s words, “The students are doing some really good work. We have each working in a distinctly different style – an impressionist, a realist, a post-impressionist, and one who has a Matisse looking thing going. Very diverse group.” Their diverse styles show up pretty well in the photos below.

We were able to purchase a new display case for our retail area and new electric kiln for our pottery programs through the generosity of our supporters and the Arts Council’s Power2Give program. Cape Fear Studios Celebrates the Arts Recap

CFS Arts fest-27Thank you everyone who joined us for our First Annual Cape Fear Studios Celebration. We had members and friends who donated their time to demonstrate pottery, raku pottery, 2D painting, stained glass, and jewelry. Our volunteers and members  took charge of the kids activities and they had a great time decorating their pumpkins, soup spoons, sidewalk and clay leaves. CFS Arts fest-35The homemade soup was delicious and a big hit with all of our guests. Sweet Boutique joined us and donated the cookies, they were amazing! We had the kids choir  come out and provide us with musical accompaniment. Last but not least, we had amazing vendors who showed up to exhibit their handmade work! We had jewelers, woodwork, candle makers, crocheting, homespun yarn, photography, and eco-friendly baby items.

We enjoyed it so much that we will be hosting the event again next year. Those of you who weren’t able to participate will definitely have another chance next year. We hope to see you there! Contact us for vendor applications and details!
