Artist statement
simple, classical, inspired...
I began woodturning about ten years ago. Since that time, I have attended many classes and workshops in turning. Once or twice a year I spend a week studying with some of the top turners in the craft at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, Tennessee.
I produce functional pieces such as bowls, trays, and boxes, using many native woods provided to me by neighbors who seem to prefer grass lawns to trees. I allow the rough log to tell me what to do with it. I particularly like to work with burls, often leaving a natural edge on my bowls. I aim for simple, classical shapes, often inspired by oriental or Native American pottery.
