Currently, I am in the developmental stages of exploring the historical importance of Christianity in art: the delicate relationship of temporal and sacred. My fascination with this dimension of art in the medieval era and renaissance is the driving influence behind my work.

I am drawn to the beauty of illuminated manuscripts and I love the way in which visual art tells the story along with the writing. The lavish decorations that adorned these works were just as essential as the written word. My work seeks to reflect this art of the past that told the story of the divine.

At the heart of my art are people, the crowning jewel of God’s creation and the focus of Scripture. In my drawing I emphasize light and detail. And, as in medieval painting, I use gold to signify the spiritual. In expressing the encounter between people and the divine, I find that using colored pencil is my preferred medium for the figures because it illustrates vivid color and gives crisp definition.

My hope is that, by reimagining past imagery, my work will evoke the timelessness of personal devotion and spiritual experience.
